Hvert ertu að fara? (Where are you going?) is a Polaroid-based photographic series created during personal road trips through Iceland. It explores the quiet transformation of the country’s landscapes in the face of climate change. From shrinking glaciers and steaming geothermal fields to eroding coastlines and wide, weather-worn highlands, the images reflect a land shaped by ancient forces and now marked by human impact.
Shot entirely on Polaroid film, the work embraces the medium’s slowness, unpredictability, and softness. Each print develops in the hand, creating a unique physical object that feels both immediate and ephemeral. The imperfections and gentle textures of the images echo the fragile and often invisible changes happening in the environment. At the same time, the project acknowledges the contradiction of using instant film. Polaroid relies on chemical processes, plastic casings, and materials that are not environmentally sustainable. The act of documenting ecological loss through a medium that leaves its own footprint raises complex questions.
This project is not intended as a scientific study. It is a personal reflection on presence, memory, and responsibility. It invites viewers to slow down and notice, to see landscapes not only as beautiful or remote but as vulnerable and changing. Each image serves as a quiet witness, holding both wonder and unease. Through this process, the project becomes a way of asking how we remember what is vanishing, and how we choose to care for the world as it shifts around us.
